KXT250 TECATE 3 WHAT PARTS SWAP INTERCHANGE?

Try to find KX250s that match up to the years of T3 you have. Many parts swap. For 1984/85 Tecate use 1983/84 KX250 motors. For 1986/87 Tecate use 1985-1986 KX250 motors but 1985 cylinder and some internals are different.

For all years Tecate 3:

Try to find KX250s that match up to the years of T3 you have. Many parts swap. I have stripped an 84 KX and have 2 86 KXs.

Complete KX250 electrical systems 1983-1986 (no lights/ smaller flywheel) can be used and well many more dirt bikes if you have a degree wheel and know how to time everything. Discussed more later in the thread.

T4 Kick start lever and shifter lever.

KX500 FMF expansion chamber o-ring and spring kit

Rear shocks can be made to work: 2001 Raptor, Banshee, 300ex . ( LT250R rear shock is a possibility)

Petcock- Banshee can bolt-on but spigot faces and leaves no clearance for fuel line with the airbox. 2002 kx125 bolts right up.

Oil fill cap plug- KAWASAKI KX 60/65 80/85 1983 - 2009 and KAWASAKI KX 125 / 250 1984 - 2004 and KX500 1986-2004

Tecate 3 swing arms all swap with corresponding linkages meaning the entire rear end cantilever setup.

T3 Intake boots including 1983-1986 KX250 (diameters for carb vary).

T3 Reeds all years and 1983-1998 KX250, KX500 all years, 1987 LT250R/LT500R. Reed cages also same minus Suzuki LTs.

T3 grab bars.

Front sprocket guard / case saver: 1983-2004 KX250, (KDX200 all years?, KX500 ?).

4/156 rear rim like Mojave, 2003 Polaris 500 Predator, and 89/90 Banshee.

Can use many years of KX250 kick start levers but they are longer, spline area is different, and plastic will be in the way of your heel somewhat

Axle Carriers swap for all years.

Stator / flywheel cover are same for all years T3 and 1983-86 KX250.

84-87 T3 and 87-88 T4 flywheels are all the same

Swingarm bolt is same and can use one from LT250R

For 1986/87 Tecate 3:

The 1985 and 1986 KX250 motor is a direct swap into Tecate frame, but the gearing right off the crank is different.

1986 KX: pipe (must mod stinger), intake boot all years KXT, brake levers/ lines, radiators, motor parts (taller gearing off crank-???), cables, intake, chain slides, bearings, rear dog bone longer but adjustable. Stator, flywheel, CDI, and wiring harness must be used as a unit.

1985 KX: same as above except cylinder has different Power Valve (can be made to work).

Stock Front and rear brake discs are the same on 86 T3.

Mojave, Lakota, T4 gas cap

Shifter lever for Honda xr650l 93-04 is a direct fit 86 t3

T-4 tail light.

Lakota tool box- use bracket from Lakota

1983-1986 KX chain slide same as 1986 T3.

4/170 Honda 250R 200x 350x front rim.

Rear wheel hubs: 24 spline 1985-86 LT250R 4/130 and 5/130 1987 LT250R hubs. T-4 (4 on 156mm) and 1986 KLT185 (4 on 4") rear wheel hubs.
The rear hub splines are also the same as These Honda's 70, 90, 11, 125m, 185, 185s, 200, 200e, 200es, 200m, 200s, 200x, and 300ex/400ex.

6008 # rear axle bearings. 6008-2RS, 6008LLU, 6008-RS, 6008LU (depending on one or 2 seals)

1986-2004 KX500 motor. Must mod cross brace to fit spark plug and cap.

For 1984/85 Tecate 3:

Link to Jimmy White Replica manual: http://www.3wheelerworld.com/oldsite/files/Manuals/JWR1.pdf

The 1983 and 1984 KX250 motor is a direct swap into Tecate frame. (This also means the Tecate motor swaps into KX250 frame, sorry, someone needed help with what "swap" means)

1983-1984 KX: motor (taller gearing off crank-??? and trans less robust), front brake levers/lines same as 1986 KX, intake boot all years KXT, rear dog bone longer non-adjustable, Stator, flywheel, CDI, and wiring harness must be used as a unit.

The oem fork bushings are discontinued through kawasaki. But... since these forks are nearly identical to the 1982-83 Yamaha yz 100, the bushings are exact replacements. Yz units are longer and have a bit more travel, but the components in leg are same. Even the oem yz fork seals and dust caps are better quality imo.......Kyb was the supplier for both machines, so this allows me to rebush all of my 85 kxt forks thanks to Yamaha still carrying replacement wear items.

Good stuff. So you're saying I can put a T4 axle on my T3's?

nd4speed
03-05-2009, 08:25 AM
I have not done it but this is the first part I had to search for. I received no help when I asked if the T4 axle worked. Someone just offered to sell me a nice stock one.

Knowledge is power and sometimes profit. So, instead of helping, some just try to make a profit by keeping it a secret or hording or whatever else the American way is.

Seems the entire post was deleted. Wonder why? Wasn't moved to world class help either.

From post:
http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/s...385#post456385

"AS for the 86+87 you can use a tecate 4 axle.

I have been keep this under my hat for alittle while, after that ordeal with the decals I swore I'd never help this stite again.I give you 1 more chance.

there are 2 things you need to know.

first: you can only use the eliminator axles.the tecate 4 is shorter then the tecate 3.so a plus 4 is only going to be +2 or stock.

second: you must use a rad lock nut there is not enough threads for double nuts.

THANKS TRIZTUNES!!!!!!"

http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=61267

Later in this thread someone successfully installs a T4 axle without mods like what is stated and shown below....

UPDATE ON T4 AXLE. One member installed one but it is not a direct bolt-on. He had to cut a new circlip groove and hub spacers to center the axle, so it does work with little mods. See in here: http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=103939

No one has ever produced a picture just like the guy who said this:
"Look for an extended 400ex axle. I put a RPM Dominator axle in my tecate bearing carrier. I used a 350x brake disc hub and axle nut. I also modified an 84 T3 brake disc to work. You will need to space out your brake caliper if you do this."

http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=41491&highlight=400ex+axle

2012 DURABLUE will make new axles if you buy enough of them.

The 350x rim and 200x rims works on the front of the 86-87 tecate.

Oh for the rubber bushings for the rear fender brace and headlight frame, you can go to autozone and get the windshield wiper motor bushings. They come in a pack of 3 with the metal insert and fit perfect (located in the universal parts area).

T-4 kicker and shifter

Hydraulic brake lines can be custom made and often locally.

Single piston brake calipers are all very similar just the mounting bracket needs to be swapped and correct brake pads used.

PRM rear grab bars.

Front brake levers are all quite similar.

Front clutch levers / perches all quite similar.

4 bolts on 170mm circle for the front rim if you want to use one off a Honda or custom order a 10" one.

The kick start lever shaft of the Tecate has longer splines than the KX250 so the swap has to use the correct kick start lever and nut. But the parts should fit on either shaft.

This is a BRAND NEW aftermarket replacement kicker / kick start lever for several Kawasaki KE , KDX , KL , KLX , & KX -series offroad motorcycles. This brand new kicker is an excellent, high quality replacement part that should give you years of dependable service. It is made of high quality steel and chrome. This kicker is the equivalent of Genuine Kawasaki OEM Part # 13064-1009 , 13064-1018 & 13064-1027 .

This Kickstart Lever fits:

KE125-A8 KE125 (1981)
KE125-A9 KE125 (1982)

KX250-D2 KX250 (1986)

I believe these are EMGO brand.

**UPDATE**
I bought one of these for $10 but have never used it.

Another member reports they are cheap, made it Taiwan, and bend rather easy. So fair warning.

**INSTALL UPDATE**
Splines were tight to mount so it was hard to position.
It interferes with pipe some on Tecate, but it is not a show stopper just annoying. It's not rubbing the pipe.
Knuckle is more sized for KX250 kick shaft (why I used it since I could not find my other kicker)
Doesn't interfere with plastic, and neither does your foot if your careful
When kicked down it hits the foot peg spring which is bad news.
Unfortunately dont know if they are even sold anymore.

Seen a couple for sale and they were practically givin them away.

1987-1998 KX250 and 1986-2004 KX500 intake carb boot is angled and is not a direct replacement but they will bolt on and the air box will need to be removed and some type of POD air filter or custom air box must be used on the carb.

(Seems the reeds and cages after 1996 are different, but appear to be the same bolt pattern, so one may be able to upgrade to a modern reed cage and more available style reeds.)

Pictured is Rad Valve for a KX250 with carb and UNI POD filter.

what this also means is the intake bolt pattern is the same for over 2 decades (up to 2004 for sure) for KX250 and KX500 so go buy a modern Vforce reed cage and slap it on there.

UNI POD Filter for those who do not have air box:
If running KX500 / KX250 boot I run UNI UP-4245ST Dual stage 2.5" ID, 4" OD, 4" length. (6 inch length will pass frame by 2").
If running KXT250 straight boot try Dual Layered Angled Pod Filter I.D. 2 ½" - O.D. 4” - LG. 4" Item # UP-4245AST (has 15 degree angled spigot to help clear shock.

84,85 owners will have hard time running angled intake manifold boot off KX250/500 cause frame will be in the way.

There are also single stage UNI POD filters out there but beware some are for snowmobiles and not rated for dirt. So go dual stage if you can unless you are running in winter.

2.5" ID is also for a larger 36-40mm carb, always measure your carb before buying.

Not a KX part, but YFZ 450 ft brake master cyl works beautifully on a '86 t-3. lever feel is excellent, I am super happy with this swap. I got a great used on fee-bay for 25.00 shipped.

i am also using a thumb throttle from a yfz, lovin it too.

Don't forget about banshee petcocks, the holes have to be slightly oblonged, but they are a great solution for a old stocker.

Oh I almost forgot, I am using a ft brake hose from a KFX450 dirt bike, it is about 1/2 inch too short, but is working great.

Thanks for putting out the info for us. I am gearing up to give my T3 some much needed TLC and this stuff is coming in handy for sure. I've read about Banshee, Raptor, 300EX, and 250R rear shocks fitting. Can someone give me some solid info on this as it relates to my 86 T3?

Thanks.

Great thread.

I don't have much to offer that hasn't been already mentioned.

For anyone who may be interested in this, all I can say is for anyone who has an 84/85 that would want to put the front end of an 86/87 on it, it bolts right up. That way the front end is far superior, with better forks, and a taller, skinnier tire for better handling. You will have to make a bracket for the radiator. I see a way to do it using the existing bolts that normally hold the 86 T3 headlight bracket. I will show pics and step by step how I make the bracket when I get it fabbed.

Rear hubs from a kawasaki KLT 110 will fit tight, and still uses the stock bolt pattern. (For 84-85 Tecate)

arent the steering stem stops different on the two models forks?
They are different only that they are shaped slightly different and look a little different. They both measure approximately 3.5 inches across. Even with the bigger 85 gas tank on, I have full turning radius all the way until the stops meet, and the fork doesn't hit the tank. In fact, with the 86 front on there, the turning radius actually equals a greater radius, because it is skinnier and thus turns farther because of the physics of it.

So, for all intents and purposes, the stops work just as well, and do their job if the front ends are swapped. I hope that answers your question.

Banshee Petcock for what years of Tecate?

'86-'87, pretty sure it will fit 1'st gen as well.

I like the Banshee one because I wanted to retain the reserve feature. MX petcocks are on-off.

I read a post where a guy put a Banshee rear shock on his LT250R so I believe my assumption about a rear 1985-90 Suzuki LT250R shock working on a Tecate 3 is correct. The shock is like 1.5 inches longer and you could drill the bearing sleeve out to fit the tecate bolt.

**UPDATE** 6/11/2010
Another thread where a guy said the banshee shock is direct bolt on for 1985-1990 LT250R
LT250R shocks are rebuildable and available easily.

The LT shock is longer than both Banshee and T3 though by 1.5" so maybe Banshee is better fit and even more available, guess it depends on the ride.

I hate the look of my 84-85 tecate gas cap, and was looking around the net and found a black billet aluminum one with the vent hose for $29 for a banshee. Checked the cap on the Banshee tank on the tecate tank. Its a perfect fit.
Needless to say I'm ordering one for my Tecate.

You can also make an 84 tecates rear shock compression adjustable by using the kx reservoir with the adjuster on it.

1985 KX125 clutch cable works on a 84-85 Tecate as well. Tried that one at the desert to get my tecate back on the road.

nd4speed
04-01-2009, 08:14 PM
What years? and different between what?

The KX motor mounts do not swap on any years of Tecate. (well at least the uppers but pretty sure the fronts do not either)

Also brake brackets are removable and often can be swapped to other brake calipers. WHY don't more people do this!
Example- LT250r rear brake calipers are always bad and consistently sell for $50-60 on ebay. The banshee rear brake caliper is the same as the LT and available everywhere, just a different bracket. Hell, all the big Jap 4 brakes are probably all made by the same Jap company. Just swap the brackets!

Look at the pictures and see the brackets removed? These are all you need. Calipers can be bought new and the bracket added or made. That is why you see them on ebay new for $120. Those people are buying new calipers cheap and making the brackets and putting them together and then jacking up the price for profit. Look at the pictures !!! Why does no one do this ?!!!

Anyone ever try a DRZ110 / KLX110 2002-2004 or 20005-08 +1 extended shifter on their Tecate?

There was one at a local parts store but I need to measure the splined area and overall length. I don't know what makes a difference between the years.

***UPDATE*** Got a 2002-04 KLX / DRZ 110 +1" shifter made by MSR and it would be a perfect replacement if it was about an 1.5" longer.

I have installed the shifter and it's not so bad right now after a ride around the block, but heavier use is needed. I wear a size like 10-11 shoe and I shifted like normal and noticed no problems.

It tucks in tighter and the length is close because of that, if it was bent out like OEM it would be even shorter.

**update 2** BTW I rode with it for a couple hours today. It tucks in close to the bike so my foot had to search to the right to find it.

It lined up with the shift pad on my MX boot and really did not feel unnatural or awkward.

**UPDATE 3*** After using it for awhile I noticed the chain rubs on it a little with a 13 tooth front sprocket. With larger sprocket this could be a problem. Hence why the OEM was made with the flat spot where the chain travels.

(what makes the 05-10 shifter different??? )

A 1986 kx250 motor is exactly the same except the transmission is geared higher right off the crank. All motor parts from 1986 swap and interchange.

You can change the gearing but I really have seen no info on it, but gearing and tire size is your choice.

the small gear on the back of the clutch basket kxf250 17 tooth while kxt250 and kx250 have a 18 tooth gear. Also the big gear on the clutch basket of the T4 is 62t, the T3 56t and the kx 55t. The main drive gear ,off the crank,on the kxt is 18 and kx is 20 tooth. I have done a swap on my kxt clutch basket and crank gear with a kx clutch basket and crank gear and that really woke the kxt right up.

THIS RESPONSE IS OFF TOPIC REGARDING 1983-84 KX250 SHOCKS:

http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=60994 I posted this link earlier in this thread and had you read the thread you would know what happened to that 1984 KX250.

I got like $70 for one shock off 1986 and it was blown. I still use 1984 shock on my 1986 but I have a better one for my 1986 now. Well the shock that came off my 1984 may not have a remote rezzie so I may not even know where it came from but it works.

This thread clearly states on page 1 that the motors swap. Did you read the rest of the thread, cause you seem to keep asking questions that have already been answered because YOU already asked them and I already answered them?

I eventually gave what info i could because people seemed to be tight lipped about how to find or replace parts (due to profit motives i suspect) and it was very frustrating. But, I am losing interest and will just let the rest of the community to decide the fate of this thread.

Recently I found out radiator caps are easily available at many of your local auto parts stores. I do not know much about the specifics but if you take your rad cap in most likely they will find you one. I thought one would want a 1.6 but maybe a 1.1 is needed. I heard about getting them off small Toyotas and the like. Anyway here is a little info about the subject:

"I just spent some time researching radiator caps for an 03 KX250 and figured I would share my findings here on the forum.

I was able to purchase a replacement cap at Advance Auto parts. Its a Stant part number 11333 or 10333 - both are the same part, just different packaging.

I bought it for $6.89.

The cap also fits several different cars. Here are a few examples.

07 Lexus 470
03 Maxda Protege with 2.0L Turbo

This is a 16psi cap, which is the same as stock. (service manual says 13-18 psi)

I believe the 1.1 number on the stock cap is 1.1 bar = 16.1 psi

So the optional 1.6 bar = 23.2 psi ?? wow that sounds high. Anyone know if thats right?

i have been buying that exact cap since ive been riding, ill never pay motorcycle prices for one of thos dam things, it works fine, just a higher pressure cap, some people get a 1.6 to help keep thier bike from loosing coolant so easy"

Radiator shrouds 1986-87 KXT.
Gas tank cover/rad shrouds by DC Plastics (warning you have to trim them so they don't interfere with triple tree movement).

This theory has often crossed my mind: 1986 KX250 and KX500 stators are the same, 1986 KX500 stator and flywheel can be used on all KX500s 1986-2004, Modern KX250 ignition system (stator, flywheel, cdi, secondary coil, wires) can be used on KX500, therefore modern KX250 (and kx125) can be used on KXT250.

You will need degree wheel and dial indicator set up.

I am not an electrical genius but I really don't think these electrical systems are complicated. You time the spark every 360 degree rotation when piston at X degrees bTDC. As pointed out, line up the 3 marks- flywheel, stator, and on case. Done.

Building a motor and using a crappy old electrical system will cause poor performance.

The proof is found in this discussion of swapping KX500 ignition components:
http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,4929.0.html

Here is an excerpt:
1. "I used the 2001 (KX250) components, with a pro circuit ignition....The bore diameter for the flywheel is the same as the 500

The stator does bolt up but will require it to be positioned differently than the 250 because of where the wires exit the cases and the timing marks being about 180 degrees off.

The stator has to have a minor modification in the pickup coil area as the flywheel sits a bit deeper than the K5 flywheel, and the slots have to be lenghtened to get the right timing, and as said the wires have to be re-routed to come out the top instead of the front of the cases.

On the Kawi it is actually quite easy to adapt, the flywheel has a mark on it, the stator has the 3 timing marks and the case has a timing mark. I think I set mine at 13 degrees btdc, (don't remember exactly, whatever the 500 was) anyway all 3 marks line up and your set."

2. "I have tried the '96/'97 KX125 complete ignition on my 500 hillclimber."

3. "In my k5 tecate i wanted lighting, so somewhere years back i read in one the dirtbike mags about the staff running a kx500 in a desert race using a tecate-3 stator and flywheel. Other than they had to modify the slots in the stator plate to allow correct timing indexing it was a pretty straight up deal. this stuck in my head all these years and now i find myself with a ricky stator stator setup and tec-3 cdi on the desk in front of me. Now the biggest trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro of this so far is the fact that the tecate cdi's have been discontinued, so i had to hunt that down on ebay :S
while pouring through my bike manual for the 500 i noticed that a few of the year use a 3-wire stator just like the tec 3 *lightbulb!* i made up a little diagram of the basic ignition circut that i have setup along with the wire colors and where they go inside the stator as well as in the rest of the harness. (which hopefully posts) now what i would like some help on is some kinda picture or good clear drawing of anyone out there with a 3 wire stator k5 like the '89 models were to compare the wire colors and relative coil connections against. i think it very possible to use a k5 cdi along with the tec-3 stator and flywheel, (which by the way ricky stator offer both the flywheels and stators as new for 125 a piece)
Decent lighting and still retain the 500's advance curve and timing all for under 300. sounds like a good idea to me Smiley

ohh in my little copy/paste diagram i made, my lighting coil was designed to go into a rectifier/regulator and then into a battery and those are the yellow wirres leading out of the stator."

HERE is article on using KDX200 harness, headlight /tail light on modified KX500 stator for KX500 motor

Most of my oil fill caps / plugs for the clutch cover have been twisted in half. I would get an OEM one of all rubber since there is no oil splash guard in the clutch cover.

These plugs are all the same:

All Tecates 3 (4) and

KAWASAKI KX 60/65 80/85 1983 - 2009

KAWASAKI KX 125 / 250 1984 - 2004

KX500 1986-2004

# CRF450 02-07
# YZ/YZF80/85125/250/426/450 ALL
# RM65 ALL

Or if you would like a colored anodized aluminum one many companies like Magnum make them.

The clutch springs for 84-85 Tecate can be found in so many bikes it would be hard to list them all, but here is one example: KX500 1989-2004

What is odd is the 1986 KX250 springs, same as 1987-88 KX500 or GT550 1983-2001 or ZR550 1991-99 (also many more)

I had a friend in high school that had a KX500 with the Tecate lighting coil and a single large light. It worked like a charm. I think he had Ricky Stator set it up if I am remembering correctly.

For 1986 T3 i have:

Suspension linkage bearing, seal, collar same as swingarm pivot???

Axle bearings 40x68x15 (same as LT250R) with carrier seals as:
Left- 40x62x9
Right- 50x68x7

swingarm bearings and collars are the same as the upper suspension linkage bearings and collars.

lt250r axle bearings are cheaper than 86 tecate axle bearings. and there the same parts. kinda odd. lt230, and t4 axle bearings also fit.

upper shock spherical bearing can be replaced with a much cheaper neeled bearing. bearing number NA4900 UU $5 off ebay. you just have to use the stock bearing spacers and seals. fits perfect. will also fit the 84-85 t3 and the t4's

lt250r, lt500r swingarm bolts fit the 86 tecates, and should work on the 84-85's. or you can pm yamahondaman for a nice stainless one.

lt250r master cylinder rebuild kits fit the front and rear master cylinders on the 86 tecate. just get the front for front and rear for rear.

no...................as for now it is known the carriers fit all swingarms but the matching brake and axle setups must be used with respective carriers.

1986 KX250 has different 4th and 5th gears on the transmission.
1986 KX250 clutch basket gear has one less tooth while the primary driven gear off the crank has one more tooth.
1986 KX250 has different shift shaft seal.

1986 KX250 has 20 tooth primary driven gear off crank/ Tecate has 18.

Any other 1986 KX and KXT motor differences i should add ?

I was beginning to wonder about fork bushings for all years and for KX250.

Any one else have any input on fork bushings? (besides below)

1985 KXT FORK BUSHINGS:

The oem fork bushings are discontinued through kawasaki. But... since these forks are nearly identical to the 1982-83 Yamaha yz 100, the bushings are exact replacements. Yz units are longer and have a bit more travel, but the components in leg are same. Even the oem yz fork seals and dust caps are better quality imo.......Kyb was the supplier for both machines, so this allows me to rebush all of my 85 kxt forks thanks to Yamaha still carrying replacement wear items.

The 86/87 KXT alu swing arm is basically a direct swap out to the 84/85 steel swing arm. You will need to have the shock mount repositioned and welded to center it. You will use all your 84/85 parts on the 86/87 alu swinger IF you don't extend the swinger any longer ~ if you do exstend I used a 85/86 ATC 250R rear brake line since stock for stock the 85/86 250R has a 4 inch longer swing arm then the stock 84/85 T-3.
Stock for stock the 86/87 swinger is 2 inches longer and around 15 pounds lighter.
I extended the alu swinger 4 more inches giving me a total of 6 inch over stock length. I also cut out alot of extra alu out of the 86/87 swinger since it was way over built IMO.

Sorry about that, I had my forks rebuilt by someone else who ordered the seals and i asked him what they were and he said Yamaha and gave me that number. I removed the reference to the number.

This fork seals (2) fit these models. HONDA 81 CR250R / CR450R . KAWASAKI 82 KX125 , 86-87 KXT250 / 250 TECATE . YAMAHA 84 THRU 96 XT600 , 90-91 XT600E.

I read through here and theres a chance I missed it. Is the bolt pattern the same on the head on the t-4 vs the 86/7 t-3? Ive never had the chance to see them side by side. I know the other motor parts dont interchange but I figured if the bolt patten, channels, and dome centering were the same than it may work.

I believe the 70mm stock bore of the 86-87 T3 is larger than the 87-88 KXF250 and therefore the 3 wheeler head was often used for T4 big bore kits. Keep in mind the head dome and squish band size must match the piston/bore size. Other than that they do swap.

Since this thread was started as a place to post info on what interchanges from other machines onto the T3 I would suggest you guys with questions start separate threads asking them. You'll have a much better chance of getting an answer that way.

Well the Tecate 4 KXF grab bar will bolt right on but it is too short and does not extend out beyond the rear fender.

The 1985 KX250 motor bolts right in as posted on page 1.

I used the petcock off a KX80, the line comes out on the back side and works awesome. It doesnt have the reserve.

I tried checking the bike for a year, and had no luck. I'd assume its early 90's or late 80's.

Is there A huge difference between the master cylinder for a 85 KX250 and a 85 Tecate master cylinder? The rebuild kit for that one is like $16 Not sure if I can use it for the rear master cylinder on my Tecate. Thought maybe the one on the tecate would be different regarding it's capacity to need to stop 2 baloon tires as opposed to one skinny tire. On Dennis Kirk they have the "Part # fits these machines" and I've noticed they seem to leave the Tecate 3 off the lists A lot but have A million other models listed logic tells me some of these parts should fit, reeks of conspiracy imo.

hey i've been working the 86/87 rear master rebuild kit search for a few days now.... no body lists jack for them... after looking at the moose racing list almost all the kawasaki bikes use the same rebuild kit, all i want are the new seals for the piston and the bottom seal where the rod comes out. i'll order one tomorrow and see what it looks like.

also wondering if any body has tried a newer kdx220 rear master, it looks very close to the original 86/87 master....

lt250r/ lt500r rear master cylinder rebuild kits fit the rear 86 tecate rear master cylinder. the lt250r/lt500r front rebuild kits also fit the front t3 master cylinder. i rebuilt both of my master cylinders with them. include the seals spring piston and outer dust cover. i posted it on this thread awhile back.

Potential rear sprockets for 1986-87 Tecate?

Basically all Ducati bikes have the same bolt pattern but the bolt holes are tapered and 10.5mm which is 2.25mm too big. Maybe you can get special bolts made easier? Or turn down the Ducati bolts and use a die to make your own thread??

Gents KFX450 rear swingarms. There is a heap on ebay, has anyone measured one up to fit an 86/87 Tecate?

The end that goes towards the engine has the same open area that Tecates have. at top mount towards the centre, like Tecates have. And they look like they may even be longer than a Tecate swingarm. I suspect that with a little bit of machine work, those swingers could easily be made to fit into a tecate.

Say hello to round house bearing carriers, wide axles and modern hubs.

Another person has put a T4 KXF250 axle on an 86 T3:
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?109961-First-Full-Build-86-Tecate/page3

"I finally got the rear axle together. I ended up using the T4 sprocket hub, the T3 brake rotor hub and the original washer that goes between the lock nuts on the T3 axle inside of the Durablue Posi-Loc nut. I didn't have to cut spline or snap ring grooves, or anything :-). (Even though I did recut the sprocket snap ring groove for no reason due to poor alignment during a trial fit.) So, everything bolted up using the stock parts. I thought the sprocket alignment was going to be an issue, but after looking again, the T4 bolts the sprocket on the inside of the hub, and the T3 bolts it on the outside, so the difference is actually minimal, and a washer or small shim should take care of the difference. "

Connecting rod kit (Hotrods) for 1978-2007 KX250 will work for all years of the Tecate 84-87.
Kit contains: connecting rod, crank pin, crank pin bearing, thrust washers (if needed) and wrist pin bearing.

Got a KLX / DRZ 110 +1" shifter and it would be a perfect replacement if it was about an 1.5" longer.

nd4speed. You're awesome for making this thread. i remember enjoying it when it first unfolded. Now i have a question that maybe someone could help me with.

I am putting an 86 swing arm on my 85 T3. Now that the swinger is 2 inches longer, my brake line is too short. I don't know if the brake line fittings are universal or not. So, can i just go to, say, the local Honda shop and get a brake line that is the correct length and will it work? Or do i need to buy a brake line for an 86/87 T3 for proper length? Are those even still available? Or, what is interchangeable. I assume it isn't too hard to find a line that will work because I know there are several people out there that make this swing arm swap. thanks for any help.

I'm about 90% positive that the banjo fittings on either end of a rear brake line are the same, be it Honda or Kawasaki. I think a 86-87 Tecate rear brake line would work fine. Both of my tecates with extended swingarms have the extended braided rear lines, but I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where you could pick one up these days.

1993 KX125 rear master cylinder is a bolt on for the 84-85 Tecate. A longer reservoir hose will need to be used for the reservoir to go in the stock position. The reservoir is smaller and rectangular which will keep your foot from hitting it while kickstarting. The stock rear brake hose will bolt up fine. Here are some pics.

I was the one that originaly gave the tip about the banshee petcock. On the 84-85 you just turn it around so the lever is facing towards the motor. Or if you are handy with machining you can put the brass fitting in the downward or other side outlet and block the orignal side off. There is guy that sometimes pops up on ebay and sells them modified in the downward position, wants like $80 for them though.

Zane
09-18-2010, 02:04 AM
Just so its clear. 84-85 Tecate, a Banshee petcock will work just fine and you do not need to install it backwords. 86-87 it will not work at all with a airbox. Or just buy the Yamaha 2HR-24500-02 petcock with the down spout and it will work with all years.

partzilla claims they have them for $12.00

the ta does not mean tapered bearings . . no mfg uses tapered bearings for swing arms . . those are for automotive wheel bearings and steering stem bearing upgrade from all balls etc.

ta series are small diameter rollers . . hk are larger diameter rollers.

There is no cross reference for a ta bearing . . if you need a ta bearing you must buy a ta bearing.

They are both drawn cup type bearings meaning they have an external shell/housing unlike a piston needle bearing which does not.

I notice one this info the rod parts appear to be the same for 1974-1997 even though Kawasaki says the rod kit doesn't. Does Rod rebuild kit work for all Kx250 1978-1997-2004? The KX250 70mm piston was 1978-1986. So the bore and stroke changed in 1987 on KX250 and on KFX250 Tecate 4. So are rods different lengths or is it just the piston pin location is different to change the stroke?

Found out another fuel petcock that worked very slick. Fit perfect and took about 5 minutes to install. Nearly the same as the banshee (2GU) and 400 bigbear (2HR). It's a big bear 250, 3JN (-24500-02. All have same last 7 digits). It has a outflow to the front. Stuck it on today and really like it. Oh, and it's the cheapest for some reason- $16.95 + $2.75 shipping. Banshee at my dealership here was $36 and a week and a half out, ridiculous, got this one in 3 days for half the price, & the same thing.

Ive looked through here a few times, but Ive not seen anything on the front wheel spacers. Im looking for them for a 86 t3. I have 1 spare front axel they seem to be rare too. Need a good swap option.

Is the 86 4-156 also? DO a search for 4-156 on E-bay and a ton of different wheel spacers will pop up.. Alot of quads (yamaha) us the 4-156 bolt pattern on the front.

Or did I misunderstand the question? lol...

I know I have 1 used one in the junk parts box in the basement if you want it.

No problem. You should of snagged the ones Ronnie made. Everything was made of stainless. Beautiful.

Anyway...I've got your address and I'll get it out ASAP. It's got some seal wear on it but you'll easily be able to have a local machine shop punch out a few. Grade school stuff when it comes to machining. In fact...you might want to check with your local middle school, high school or vocational school. Be a good learning experiance for the beginners in metal shop and they usually don't charge much. easy CNC stuff.

Just a thought.

1985 KLF185 quad rear hubs are 13 splined and have a 4/110 hub spacing. These fit on the 84-85 Tecate rear axle. The 87 KLF185 rear hubs are 4/110 as well but look to be splined for the 86-87 Tecate rear axle.

So I just went on ebay and you are right the spines are finer on the 87 hubs .Funny thing is all these ebay seller are selling these hubs 1 by 1 ? They are not giving them away by any means either ! even more funny is the klf 185 "87" hubs they are selling for half the price as the 85 hubs . So basiacly you are looking at almost $100.00 to do this . I figured they would have those hubs for sale for like $10.00 ,I was surprised to see the prices . Can the Tecate guys ever catch a break? :wondering

A month or 2 ago there was a few pairs listed with buy it nows for about $10 + $10 shipping. There is an 87 klf hub for $20 w/ $9 in shipping. There's a Nos 85 klf hub for $50 too. These hubs can't be worth $50 a piece used because the klf's barely sell for anything as it is, I'm sure as the spring time comes there'll be more of them for sale at a price worth paying.

So if I am understanding correctly the 86 KX250 Brake calipers are a direct bolt on for the 86 KXT250? Just wondering because I need some brakes on my 86 project. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the calipers are the same, the bracket that holds them is different...

86 tecate front and rear are the same bracket and caliper, also the same on the 87 front but different rear...

Well I was looking at some front calipers today and found the 86 KX250 caliper brackets mentioned are different bolt pattern.
Is the bracket made of hardened steel?

The rear master looks similar and bolt pattern looks the same as other bikes.

49030-1065 rear hubs for 1985 KLF185 are only for 1985 and are discontinued

Makes me wonder about the splines for 1986 Tecate and KLF185 and so on.......this may mean al Bayou 220/250 and Brute Force and Prairie 700 cause I see a thread about 400ex for the P700.

Oh well, lots of honda hubs around anyway.

Acerbis Front Auxiliary Fuel Tanks 1.3 Gallon - White on ebay, Since the 86/7 came with a "short track tank" from the factory and the 250r was able to hold about .5 0r a gallon of gas more. The acerbis tank would be something to look into for the 86/7's as well as the 500's. It looks like a numberplate, but still serves a good purpose.

Sorry, but that is the one thing that I haven't figured out how to do on this site. If you type in acerbis auxilliary tank on ebay, you'll find about 8 new ones(all white in color, but I think it will still flow with the Tecate's color scheme). They go for about the same amount as a repro Atc number plate, but at least this has a use and a look factor as opposed to just the look of a # plate.

Sorry, but it's the one that mounts in front of the tripple trees, if you look in the seller's other items, you'll find it. Thanks for the advice on how to post links.

The title of the thread says kxt250 Tecate 3 what parts Fit Swap Interchange?

The last 3 words don't have commas between them, but the Acerbis auxilliary tank would be a part that Fits(it's universal and will fit anything with tripple trees). I just figured that I would mention it here because the 86/7 tank only holds about 2 gallons or so and rather than seeing someone try and replace the gas tank with another one. It would ruin the look of the machine and there really isn't a tank that could be made to work without some serious frame mods. I had plans on building an aluminum gas tank, but it isn't possible to make it any larger than the stock one with the room given. This would be a better route, especially if someone were to have a kx 500 86/7 tecate.

Has anybody ever compared the front motor mounts from a 86 kx250 to an 86 Tecate? By the pictures they look similar. It is the mounts circled "A" in the diagram. Part 32029.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/www.cheapcycleparts.com/images/manual/production/assembly_images/65388/large/50031.png?1336692040

The actual p/n is 32029-1438 and has been discontinued but its KX counterpart is still available. On the set I have, both plates have cracks so I'm looking for a replacement pair.

I dug out what I believe are 1986 Kx250 front motor mounts and compared to 86 T3.

Kx250 f. mounts have no hole in center and the bolt pattern is smaller than the T3 which means you would need to slot them towards the outside edges of the parts. This would create a thinner, weaker wall thickness. The bend of the KX f. mount matched the T3 when the mounts were stacked on top of each other.

One of the KX250 mounts I looked at was broken around a bolt hole. I held the mount to my KX frame and it seemed to be the right mount (because I had a 1984 KX).

i am suurprised if I forgot to add this to my tecate swap thread, but I put like a 1996 KX250 case saver on my 86 KX250. So KX500 1986-2004 all had the same bolt pattern for the case saver, which basically means tons KX250/500 case savers are out there. You can see Chaplin Kawasaki try to peddle them on ebay for KXT at a jacked up rate of course. They are grey with three holes in them, but keep in mind that is the plastic part, there is a metal spacer part that is to me the real case saver. That spacer can be used to save your case but leave you room to remove the front sprocket.
I think difference in chain guide has to do with stock oem sprocket size.

A couple of things I found while working on my 85 Tecate projects I could not find info about in this thread:

Tail Light and bracket:
Many Kawasaki trikes and some quads from the 80's use the same tail light and bracket. This is the eBay search string I use:
(klf110,klf 110,klt110,klt 110,klt160,klt 160,klt185,klt 185,klt250,klt 250,kxt250,kxt 250,tecate,prairie,mojave)

The tail light without the bracket is used on even more. This is the eBay search string I use:
(klf110,klf 110,klt110,klt 110,klt160,klt 160,klt185,klt 185,klt250,klt 250,kef300,kef 300,klf220,klf 220,klf300,klf 300,ksf250,ksf 250,kvf300,kvf 300,kvf400,kvf 400,kxt250,kxt 250,tecate,bayou,lakota,prairie,mojave)

The rubber gas tank retention strap is the same as a bunch of old Kawasakis and is reproduced although you can get them for like $10. I just search for the Kawasaki part number: 92072-042
For some reason, 2 of my 3 trikes did not have these straps. I was able to get 2 shipped to me for lke $12.

Just saw a picture of a banshee shock on 84/85 Tecate. Rezzie was at bottom. Shock is a bit sorter like half inch though. The owner liked the ride of the shock. Banshee shock fits on LT250R so I still think LT250R shock is option for all years.

I assume any year Banshee shock will work correct?

Someone had mentioned a replacement for the rear master cylinder earlier, I used one from my 01 kx250 parts bike and it required just a little modification. The stock reservoir was broke and the kx has a smaller one which is further out of the way of the kicker you'll just have to check the level maybe a bit more often. The kx uses 6mm bolts so I drilled em out and tapped them to 8 x 1.25 the tecate uses and I used the pushrod and clevis from the tecate as well since it is longer and necessary because I had to slot the mounting plate holes just a bit so the peddle would come up to a comfortable level but it works great and was an easy swap

Race Tech makes a replacement for Kawasaki p/n 44018-1051. it is Race Tech p/n FMBI 41201 P. They have many of the street bikes listed but not the 86/87 Tecate. It is the same part though. I just paid $25 for a pair. :w00t:

As far a the 84/85 suspension linkage bearings it looks like a 94/95 Honda CB1000 swingarm bearing should work:
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-91063-MZ1-003.html

It's the same size roller bearing, I wonder if the dust seals are usable too?

Well some KX500 riders are saying the weak small spring pushing together the ratchet gears is why the kickstart gear slips and the slipping causes the gear damage.

Solution 1 was add another washer to push the spring harder or of course coming up with a strong spring.

Having the right washers in the assembly stack or even adding more to the stack.

Cutting back gears if needed but they may be surface hardened???

Kick starter will not always engage when engine is cold. If I lean the bike to the right and pull slightly on the kick start shaft it will usually engage. Once the bike starts and warms up a little no problems after that. Kick starter engages every time.

I had the exact same problem with my 500 when I bought it...once it was warmed up, it was fine.
It was the ratchet spring that was the problem...they're a fine wire spring and get weak over time.
Get the correct part #...and they're under $10.

There was also talk of KX250 engine parts were not changed much from 89-2004 for sure and the changes were minor and all versions are compatible.

trailpros happens... the 3. gear of the ´87 is now for the scrap man ... same problem like on the ´83 kx250 2 years ago ...
First i fixed the transmission of my 87-motor . A snap ring was out of direction. gears still looking like new. so i replaced all snap rings and washers..

KX 250 Transmission Gears and forks are matching from ´83-´89 only the shafts were changed in 85 and 88 ...

190709
190710
Supposed KX250 Factory Race works crank?
190711

Much to learn and now i know quite every part that was mounted on the kx 2stroke 250 and 500 between 1983 and 2008 ... and you would be stunned to learn that a little handful parts in the last kx250 in 2008 were unchanged since 1978...

Kawi didn't change things unless they could make it worth while. Look at the kx500 1988 they found a frame and ergos that carried the bike until 04, 89-04 KX500 engines stayed the same except for a few minor parts that can be adapted to fit all those years, They used the "K.I.S.S." and "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mottos lol

Hi All,

Just one of my options right now since parts are hard to find.

I'm adding up the cost to fix the motor and it's coming close to the price of a good used 2000 kx motor I found.

So how much moding do I need to do to get it to fit?

dinky,

thats definetely a job for the advanced kx-wrencher!... smiley

the 2000 engine fits to the 87 lower motormounts, but its still a lot of modifying the 87 use 8mm motorbolts and 15mm swingarm-bolt . the 2000 engine has 10mm boltholes and 17mm swingarm-bolt...
last year i had a 96 engine in my 87 frame... you need a completed modifyed pipe , bolt-on-headstay or a 2003/04 cylinderhead, handmade-bushings everywhere for the motormounts and swingarm-bolt...handmade brackets for the headstay...
here you can take a look at it: http://der-motopunk.de.tl/projekt-evo_racer-kx250E1-.htm

if i where you, i would rebuild the 87 engine or try to get an good used 88-91 engine. that would make some things easier for the engine swap...
second option: you can try to fit the 2000 crank and cylinder to the 87 motor-bottom, but also not as easy as it sounds in first...

Here's the link for swapping forks from the 85 Tecate to using the 86 Tecate forks:

http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/93870-Can-I-get-some-honest-opinions-criticism-for-my-Tecate-please

I read somewhere in this thread it was possible and it got me curious, there's no real details to the swap but there are some pics and input from members in there.

I swapped the 85 out for the 86 forks, it's a direct swap fits like a glove.

Oh wow he tried to put the 1986/87 style tank and radiator setup on the A1/A2....I searched around for info and found people saying it was possible but with no pictures and no real steps of what was involved in the swap. Good find!

Some one on here was going to buy a 86 Triple tree set from me to do this swap soon but the money never showed and guess he hasnt had time to get started on it. Maybe he will and provide more info on the conversion.

So it seems the 1990-94 KDX250 is a direct bolt on motor swap for the 1986/87 Tecate. Sprockets, swingarm bolt, and Motor mounts line up except the front need spacers and the upper motor mounts always need to be fabricated or modded.

This also means many other KX250 motors fit directly in this frame as mentioned like 3 posts above this one.

Read about a members cool swap and build here:

Bushing fit, but they don't. Some modification needed

A slight hiccup. The Race Tech bushings are a tiny bit thicker than stock. They fit perfectly in the lower tube by themselves and fit the upper, but with a gap. The old stock bushing was almost touching itself. My idea is to reduce the overall diameter of the recess for the bushing, thus closing the gap and allowing the bushing on the inner pipe to go in the lower fork tube. I'm guessing a few thousandths if that...

01-05 Raptor 660 rear wheel hubs fit a 86/87 Tecate rear axle. Slides on nice and tight. Only difference is the hub doesn't slide on all the way as the axle splines stop and there is about a 1/4-1/2 inch gap from hubs hitting the stop point on the axle. Also on area where the nut goes on the hub sticks out about a 1/4 inch from where the splines stop. 192988192987

I know you said the T4 motor doesn't fit the 86 T3, but does it require a lot of work? My frame, swing arm were just powder coated. I have a spare 330 T4 motor in storage and that I forgot I had. I'm thinking of putting it in my build. Thanks for your input..

Petcocks:
I've got a petcock from an R1 motorcycle in mine(84 tecate). About $8 . has 5/16 lines.

Almost all Petcocks bolt on the same. With the exception of fuel line size and spigot, plenty are available. Wrecked sport bikes off high flow.

YT175 source coil fits the stator plate ever so slight modification. Maybe 1-2mm griding on the bolt holes to move it inwards and some grinding on the iron part of the coil to shape it correctly.

It's 270-330 ohms, quite a bit higher than the tecates 198-250. With that being said, it should be more potent on the spark. I'm going to give it a shot and let you guys know. I've got 2 spare CDI's, and knowing all the others that fit...

yt125/175 source coil may not put enough power out. I'm getting spark, but not a really hot spark. Not hot enough to fire. Could be ignition coil. I'll have to take 1 off the blaster to test it out.

EDIT!! I have lost magnetism on a flywheel magnet. No coil sparks well. The yt has done the best so far.. Better than my stock at 192ohms on the source coil.

I installed a moose case saver for 2003-2004 KX250 on my 1986 T3 so like 1985-2004 KX250 case savers fit all years tecate.
(the bolts included from moose were too long)

Now the moose KX250 chain guard case saver did not look like it would allow anything larger than the 13 tooth counter front sprocket.

The KX500 case saver may be the way to go if you plan to run larger than stock front sprocket.

The oem shifter spline block can be repaired by buy a new shifter and cutting off its spline block and the OEM spline block and welding the new one on the Tecate shifter.

Dave @ IRL does it and a member did it here:

I had one done at Delduca welding locally.

I wonder if the KLR 650 brake parts will fit on the Tecate... If so, there's numerous huge brake upgrades for KLR650's that would make a Tecate front flip from level ground!

The Caliper itself is the same, But the mounting bracket is different.
so unless you can use the T3 mounting brackets on the upgrade I dont know.

Thank you for taking the time and money to give this a shot. There are probably a lot of calipers out there that will fit but sometimes it takes trial and error.

Dog bone adjustable suspension link for 1986 Kx250 KX500 is same as 86/87 KXT250

You could even put the dirt bike mud flap on there to be different...lol

The Case Saver I use.
I like the look alot. Its not the Cheapest option but it also covers the Sprocket.

oh so its custom machined by Pentek out of United Kingdom

I like the plain silver OEM guard piece under the plastic one so I can access the chain and sprocket without disassembly.

I put an 86 KX250 dog bone on my 85 T3, just needed to use some washers as spacers because the 84/85 dog bones were wider.

I had a chance to compare an original 86 kx 250 connecting rod against the kxt250 connecting rod kit # 13044-5042
They are exactly the same part, don't know why the part numbers are different. Kawasaki might have wanted to keep track of what bike or atc was getting the rod so the different part number would help.
