    my Yamaha 175

hey all. im kinda new. was on here a couple years ago, but gave up on a trike. well ive since moved and just picked this up today from my dads buddy.

the only problem is that it wont start. previous owner said its a carb problem. well i took the carb apart and cleaned it all out pretty good. still wont start. and it is getting spark and fuel.

so in this image. im guessing the yellow circle is the adjustment for air/fuel ratio?
and the red one is idle, correct?

You are correct. What kind of shape is the airfilter in? Is the airbox all nice and cleaned out? Does the intake tube above the fuel tank and under the fuel tank cover have any obstructions in it? Sounds like you are heading in the right direction. You need to get that paint cleaned off those plastics though. It's not a hopeless trike at all, lots of potential. Also you may have to use some "soft scrub" kitchen cleaner and some 3m pads to get all that paint off the plastics. And as far as the chrome goes, you will want to use some 000 steel wool and that trike should clean up nicely. The 175 is a 2 stroke. Make sure the oil injection tank has 2 stroke oil in it or make sure you have 2 stroke oil mixed in the gas or you won't be very happy since it will cause the engine to seize.

Is your plug getting wet? How is the compression? I had a huge problem with the fuel pump on mine. It would work great then stop.

    ding ding ding, winner.
got it to fire up. rode it about 2 blocks and it died.

im not sure how to check compression. it sure did run good when it was goin,
i would barely touch the throttle and it would just about pop a wheelie.
but it did pull to the right while riding.

whats the best place to get some carb kits? or even parts for that matter?
the choke cable cant be pulled, it isnt attached to the handlebar.

this week at work during down time im gonna fab up a rear rack, the old handle
or whatever was back there stock was totally wasted.
and we will see what the tires do. as you can see 2 of them were flat, just
waiting to see how long they hold air.

dont fab it, buy this, 5 bucks. ive seen 10 of them on there in the last 3 months.
theres tons of stuff on ebay cheap for that tri moto. call your local dealer, they can get parts for it.

    watch ebay .

the 175 was only made in 82 or 83. I know the 83 sort of had a maroonish brown sticker saying 175, so if under that paint there are maroonish brown stickers, it's an 83. Any other color sticker, and it's an 83. If you have any of the choke cable still attached to the carb, you can pull the outside off and make a small loop in your cable and that should work for the time being. But you should look into either a proper choke cable or get a chock assembly off a 1977 ish mx175 carb where the choke pull is on the carb and not a cable. Make sure the vent on the fuel tank gas cap is unplugged. Those fuel pumps can be pricey, but they are still available. They are quite the wheelie machine when running right. Also if you can find one, there are rear suspension kits. I've found 4 over the years myself. Don't run anything but the stock exhaust on yours if you are going to use it for hunting, an aftermarket exhaust would not be very hunter friendly. Best of luck with your project.

i seen somewhere that had a choke lever conversion. which is what i would like.
now that i think about it i bet i could use a mountain bike lever for a choke.
i mean the choke cable looked just like brake cable.
are there any service manuals on the net? i havnt been able to locate any searching.
yea the one thing i know about 2 strokes is that they are loud. lol.
and what are these "reeds" im reading about?

thanks for all the help. im stoked to get this thing goin.

I have a service manual for an 83. I need to make some xerox copies for an 80 yt125 service manual, so I'll try and get the 83 service manual copied too.
The reeds are behind your carb in the cylinder. The reeds open and close with the intake of the fuel from your carb. If the reeds don't close all the way, it will hurt the preformance of your bike.
